summary: Tamaki has to cook for Break
If Tamaki never had to play another game of Truth or Dare it would be too soon. A commoner game it may be, but nothing is worth having to slave over a hot oven over and over again for a man who called him spoiled and stupid based on only two conversations. They hadn’t even introduced themselves before he made those accusations! How in the world could he have made a judgment like that so soon and based off such little knowledge about him?! (The blonde haired boy that had originally been playing the game with Break was hardly much better, and Tamaki wonders if something about their world gives everyone a genetic predisposition to be utterly infuriating and far more annoying than Hikaru and Kaoru could ever be.)
Still, Tamaki can’t deny that it’s his own fault that he’s in this whole mess. If it weren’t for his fascination (or obsession, depending on who you asked) for all things commoner this whole mess could have been avoided. Sadly, Tamaki does have that fascination and when someone says something like “You’re not a commoner until you’ve played it” or something to that effect, Tamaki is going to be compelled to play the game in question.
Then again Tamaki can think this all he wants, but everyone – himself included – knows that he never will learn his lesson the first, or even the second time around. Perhaps – a word used very lightly because there are no maybes about it – this is why Tamaki is in his current predicament of baking batch after batch of sugar cookies until they are a perfect match to the older man’s specifications. Something that gives Break great amusement and makes Tamaki want to flip tables.
At first it had only been a dare. A dare that had only been part of a game and not something that Tamaki should have been forced to do if he truly didn’t want to – he told Break as much, he told Break as much, and would you like to know what the response was?
“You’re not a commoner until you’ve cooked for someone else~. ♥”
How Tamaki managed to let himself fall for that trick twice in what was probably only 10 minutes is hardly a mystery. As was said before, Tamaki is hardly the type to learn from his mistakes after the first time.
“Ow!”
There’s a crash, a pout, and the opening of the freezer to get ice for Tamaki’s now burnt finger. That seemed like it would have been a good batch, too. It’s tempting to just put them on a plate and serve them to Break even though they’ve been on the floor, but Tamaki isn’t like that. It’s unsanitary and rude to do things like that, and rude is one thing that Tamaki will never be. Stupid and oblivious, maybe. Rude, never. He half expects Break to be at the door way watching him and laughing, but he doesn’t look to find out. He’s too busy trying to keep the ice in place on his hurt finger while using the other, unharmed hand to pick up the cookies.
It takes twice as long as it had before to make the cookies, but finally the last batch is done and when Tamaki tastes one, he’s pretty pleased with it. It’s not quite as good as it would have been if, say, Haruhi had been the one to make them, but for someone with as little experience as Tamaki it seems like a pretty big accomplishment. So he takes a plate from one of the cabinets nearby and piles the cookies on to take to the white haired man in the other room.
Tamaki half expects a snide remark about the ice on his finger, but one never comes and Break doesn’t even seem to notice that his hand has even been injured. The blonde doesn’t think much of this, though. He doesn’t know Break very well and maybe it isn’t like him to make fun of someone for something like that, or maybe Break really had been watching him when it had happened and got his laughs then. Either way, the thought passes quickly and Tamaki sets down the plate and watches and waits for a response.
“Satisfactory.”
A tiny smirk appears on Break’s lips and even though Tamaki doesn’t like him or care much for his opinion, this is all he needs to feel a strong sense of pride swell up in his chest. Someone likes his cookies! Haruhi will be so proud of him when he tells her and lets her taste one! He makes a mental note to try and go over to her house later on and let her try one – possibly patch things up with Ranka, too, because he doesn’t want them to be enemies any more.
“Well, are you just going to stand there?”
Tamaki isn’t sure if this is supposed to be an invitation to sit down and eat cookies and drink tea, but he does anyway, and he’s excited about it because he’s just so proud of himself for this. Either way, Break doesn’t seem terribly annoyed and rather than saying that he doesn’t wish for Tamaki’s company he just teases him when he bangs his burnt finger on the table causing it even more pain. This doesn’t get Tamaki down, though. His good moods are hard to ruin and a little teasing isn’t enough to do so now.
Tamaki can get used to this, he thinks. Doing the cooking in this relationship (dysfunctional as it is) might not be so bad if it makes him feel this proud everytime.
